- Chapter Thirteen -

* * *

Instinctively, I reach for the cave wall, grasping for its firmness in an attempt to stop my head from spinning. Missing the wall, I wobble sideways and stumble into a small space hidden by the darkness.

As my arms flail, searching for the wall’s solidness, something grasps me around a wrist, yanking me sideways into the gap. Rocks clatter as I stagger into the darkness, barely making it between the two rock surfaces on either side. Eir gasps and clasps me, dragged along behind. The clacking of rocks colliding behind us draws my attention in time to see the dim light of the corridor disappearing as the rocks slam together, illuminating the final crack. Suddenly, the space feels more claustrophobic than the little room the elf had trapped us in.

Something continues to yank me along sideways, and my feet trip over rocks lining the floor, seeming to find every ridge along its dark surface. Stones rub along my back and front, sometimes barely allowing enough space for me to slide through. The clasp of Eir’s hand remains firm around my wrist even as she struggles to weave her thin frame through the gap.

Darkness completely encases us, and after a few minutes of being dragged through this rocky hell, I still don’t know who our new captor is. No amount of searching gives away whatever or whoever is pulling us along. All that I know is they certainly have a firm grasp. Only hope keeps me going—hope that whatever this is doesn’t have ill intentions toward us.

After a little more stumbling, a soft hiss seizes my attention, similar to the sound Elan makes when she is shooting a plume of fire, only quieter. A ball of glowing orange captures my vision, illuminating the tiny face of a creature.

I blink in an attempt to wipe away the trick my eyes are playing on me. A tiny creature sits on the arm of our captor. A small flame dances on the captor’s palm, bringing with it a dim light illuminating the outline of the thing dragging us. My body stiffens. It’s a dark elf, and on her arm sits a tiny lilac dragon. The dragon flicks its spiked tail over the elf’s arm and runs up to her thin shoulders to wrap its body around her slender neck, which is covered in black leather zipped up to her chin, pointing its tiny face our way.

The elf pauses then twists, her black leather squeaking as it catches on a rock. Pointy ears stick out from under wavy shoulder-length brunette hair with silver streaks. Even in the orange glow of the flame, her face is pale as though she rarely sees the sun.

When her dark almond-shaped eyes land on me, I suck in a quick breath and scowl. “What do you want from us?”

Her dark lips purse, emphasizing her hollow cheekbones. “Is that what I get for saving you?”

“Is that what you’re doing?”

Eir releases me from her grasp and moves closer, leaning over my shoulder.
